NIC and UP Police to Ensure Electronic Access to Case Diaries and Medico-Legal Reports for Magistrates
In a significant move aimed at modernizing the judicial process, the Allahabad High Court has issued directives for the implementation of the Integrated Criminal Justice System (ICJS) in Uttar Pradesh. The judgment, delivered by Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal, mandates the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the Uttar Pradesh Police to facilitate electronic access to case diaries and chargesheets for Magistrates through the Court Information System (CIS).
The court emphasized the necessity of integrating MedLEaPR (Medical Legal Reports) and forensic science data with the existing systems to ensure that courts can access crucial documents electronically. The NIC, represented by Deputy Director General Shashi Kant Sharma, assured the court that the integration process is underway, with necessary APIs already shared with the CIS. The court's order also highlighted the need for sensitizing hospitals regarding the timely upload of medico-legal reports to MedLEaPR. In a related directive, the NIC is instructed to seek permission from the e-Committee to incorporate features for marking cognizance and registration of cases upon receipt of e-chargesheets. This move aligns with recent Supreme Court directions for electronic verification of sureties, aimed at streamlining judicial processes and reducing delays.
This judgment follows the court's previous order dated August 6, 2026, which set the groundwork for these digital integrations. The NIC and UP Police have been given a timeframe to report back on the progress made in implementing these directives, with a follow-up hearing scheduled for September 17, 2026.
