New Delhi, Sep 15 The Delhi High Court on Tuesday informed the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) that Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya has nominated two women advocates as members of the bar body to complete its composition.
A letter from the High Court’s Registrar General to the BCD secretary said advocates Sonia Mathur and Monika Arora have been nominated as women members in accordance with the Supreme Court's earlier directions.
Earlier this year, observing that State Bar Councils have increasingly become “men’s clubs”, the apex court directed the Chief Justices of the jurisdictional High Courts to nominate two co-opted women members to each State Bar Council.
The top court said the two women members should be nominated from among former women High Court judges or senior women members of the Bar.
In December 2023, the Supreme Court had ordered that 30 per cent representation in State Bar Councils be provided to women lawyers.
To address contingencies where an insufficient number of women are elected, the bench had allowed for a “co-option” mechanism to fill up to 10 per cent of those seats.
