Kolkata, Sep 15 A single bench of the Calcutta High Court will hear on September 17 a review petition by the West Bengal government regarding the court's permission to the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC for holding a public meeting on private land at Sreerampur in Hooghly district.
The meeting was supposed to have been held on September 11, but the high court stayed it earlier.
Additional Advocate General Billwadal Bhattacharya informed the court on Tuesday that the state filed the review application as permitted by a division bench presided by Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya said the review application will be taken up for hearing on September 17.
The division bench, also comprising Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, granted permission to the state government and the private owner of the land, a trust body, to file review applications.
The state government and the land owner questioned before the division bench whether a political rally or an agitation or a meeting, could have been held on the land belonging to Jagannath Jew Trustee Board.
A public meeting to be addressed by former CM Mamata Banerjee was to be held on the private land in Sreerampur on an order of the single bench.
Disposing of the appeals by the state and the private owner as withdrawn, the division bench requested the single-judge bench to decide the review plea, if filed, by September 25.
The state and the private landowner had challenged the order of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, which permitted the meeting on that land instead of a proposed rally along the congested GT Road.
The state contended before the division bench that the single judge had not taken into consideration its submission that the venue was privately owned and that the landowner's consent was required for the meeting.
The division bench had on September 10 stayed the meeting, which was to be held the next day, on the appeals after the TMC informed the court that it was postponing it so as to have a verdict on this issue.
