Chennai, Sep 15 Advocate K Kathiravan was on Tuesday elected unanimously as the Chairman of the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTP).
Addressing mediapersons, Election Officer Justice K N Basha, former judge of the Madras High Court said that for the first time in history, the Chairman, Vice Chairman for the BCTP and Member (who will represent BCTP in the apex body--Bar Council of India) were elected unanimously without any election.
Advocates E Balamurugan and P S Amalraj were elected as the Vice-Chairman and Member (Bar Council of India) respectively.
The election to the BCTP was held on March 30, 2026 and the advocates across the state had exercised their franchise.
The counting of votes went on for 120 days. Thereafter, the results were announced and 23 advocates were elected as members of BCTP.
From among them, the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Member of the Bar Council of India were elected today.
Justice V M Velumani (former judge of the Madras high court) and advocate Sudharsana Sundhar were nominated as (women nominated members) members of the BCTP by Madras High Court Chief Justice S A Dharmadhikari as per the directive of the Supreme Court.
