Man gets life imprisonment for raping mentally challenged girl in UP's Ballia

Ballia (UP), Sep 16 A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping an 11-year-old mentally challenged girl in 2025, a prosecution official said on Wednesday.


Special Public Prosecutor Vimal Kumar Rai said the girl had gone to collect fruits near a tree close to her house on July 7 last year when Bharath Thakur raped her.


A case was registered against Thakur on the complaint of the girl's father under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Rai said.


After investigation, police filed a charge sheet against the accused, he said.


Special Judge Pratham Kant heard the case and, after considering the arguments of both sides, convicted Thakur on Tuesday and sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000, Rai said.
