No garbage trucks near Fort heritage sites in Mumbai, BMC assures HC

Mumbai, Aug 19 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday informed the Bombay High Court that it would prohibit garbage transport vehicles from parking near heritage sites in the city’s Fort area, which attracts a large number of tourists.

Following concern raised by the HC over violation of its earlier order, the civic body submitted an affidavit, saying it was “committed to strictly adhering to all the directions issued by the court”.

“Orders passed by this court prohibiting activities of the garbage transport vehicles and their parking close to the heritage sites like city civil court, Mumbai University, Bombay High Court ……in Fort area shall henceforth be strictly complied with,” the affidavit said.

The parking of these vehicles shall not take place in the future, it added.

A division bench of Justices G S Kulkarni and Neela Gokhale, hearing the matter, accepted the undertaking and the statements as made in the affidavit.

The bench directed that henceforth all care and caution shall be taken in regard to the compliance of its orders.

Earlier, taking note of solid waste management vehicles parked opposite the City Civil Court on August 14, the court had described it “as a brazen violation of court directives”.

The court had said a large number of tourists, including foreigners, who visit these sites see garbage lying on the roads due to mishandling of waste by the civic body’s garbage collection trucks.
